Planning: Location - (Pio George)

Location

List of ideas:

- Car Park

- A house

- A street

-  Park

Location 1: Car Park
There are local car parks that are near, which can be used by my group, also getting permission to film would not be difficult either. The filming should take place at night, which I feel will enhance our music video to give it a more grime like feel and, the car park should be empty which would allow our group to effectively film the music video without any hindrances.

Location 2: House
Our group can film these scenes at one of our group members house. The house can be used to show domestic scenes e.g. in the bedroom, the staircase, living room, kitchen or the garden. It would also be preferable to shoot the video at night if it is being filmed in the garden, but it would not matter if the scenes inside the home are filmed during the day.

Location 3: A street
We can film this scene at one of the streets near or at the group members homes as it would be easier getting permission from the neighbours. It would be preferable to film the music video at night and our group can use cars in the video. The car can be gained by one of the group members parents, as it would be easier to gain permission or it can be their own if they have one available.

Location 4: A Park
There are parks located near where our group members are living so we have an easy access to them. Our group can film the music video in many areas of the park such as in one of its playgrounds or in another area of the park. It would be preferable to record the music video a night as well.

I believe the music video should be mainly filmed in urban areas such as the car park, a street or someones home. As in most of the grime music videos I have scene, the locations which they have been filmed are in urban areas, so it would be more effective by filming in urban areas.

Planning: Moodboard - (Pio George)

This is a moodboard I have constructed to show examples of what props will be used, what costumes will be worn by each actor and the locations the music video will be filmed at.

Planning: Costume - (Pio George)

Costume

For our groups music video, we are able to have a variety of clothing. As in music videos there are no set required clothing to wear and no clothing that is not allowed.
The main focus of the music video is the genre of grime, and usually the colour of the clothing worn in most grime music videos is darker colours like black. Such as black hoodies, jackets and tops which are of well known brands e.g. Nike.
Also other clothing would be darker coloured trousers or jeans. The footwear would be any colour such as red, white, black, blue e.t.c and these would usually be well know brands as well such as Vans or Adidas.
During the filming of the music video, I believe each of the actors in the video should wear different clothing to express their differences in preference so that it brings out each characters individuality, rather than having each character looking the same.

Location ideas (Melissa)

Location idea 1: Police station

one of the many locations we chose as a group would be to film shots for our music video outside a police station. We got inspiration from other Grime artists as we thought filming outside a police station or even by a police car would create an effective music video. In addition to this, we are conforming to the sterotype of teens or London youths in the video because typically teens are usually known for getting into trouble.

Location idea 2: Car park

Another location we could use  in our music video a car park. depending on whether an empty car park or a busy car park looks more realistic in the video we are going to trial and error to see which type of car park suits the video best. There are many car parks near each of us in the group so we have a wide selection and different style car parks to choose from, whether it is a multy story car park or just one ground level car park.

Location idea 3: High Street

For our third location, we could film parts in a high street. Trial and error will take place here too as we can take shots both in night or day and see which shots suit anf fit in with the other scenes. I think filming at night and with a dark background  with bright lights from street lights will add a great effect but also have a sense of realism.

Location (Giordano)

Location 1:

Our first location to be used in our music video is going to be an empty car park, preferably a nocturnal scene. We also want all of our filming locations to be easily accessible, so that when it comes to filming the music video, if necessary it will be easy to go back and re-film sections of the video with ease. The unusual lighting that car parks give off at night will also add a grimey undertone to the music video.  Thankfully each of the members in our group have a local car park that we would be able to film in.

Audience Feedback (Jordan):

Q1: What do you think about this chosen location to be used in our music video?

A1: I think using this as one of your locations would be a very good idea, especially as loads of grime artists have used them to film in. For example Chip, Kano and wretch 32 teamed up to film 'feeling myself' in a croyden car park.

Q2: Is there any faults with this chosen location? Or anything you think that may need reassessing?

A2: Overall, I really like the chosen location, however the only small criticism I have is that it may lack originality, as multiple grime artists use car parks to film their music videos.

Location 2:

Our second location that we would like to use in our music video is the outside of a police station. The reason for this is because we would like to challenge the stereotype of London youths in our video, as they are usually portrayed as trouble makers and as people who are generally in and out of prison for committing crimes, particularly those associated with the grime genre. Therefore choosing this as a location would add meaning to our music video.

Audience Feedback (Alex):

Q1: What do you think about this chosen location to be used in our music video?

A1: I think using a police station for a location in your music video would be very visually appealing, and not only that but the fact that you will be challenging the stereotype of London youths will also have an effect on the people watching it. it also shows that you have thought about this location carefully and have not only chosen it to make your video look appealing.

Q2: Is there any faults with this chosen location? Or anything you think that may need reassessing?

A2: Although I really like the idea of using a police station as a location, the only thing I have to say is that you may have trouble getting permission to film there, so perhaps contacting them a few weeks prior to filming would be a good idea as if you are not allowed to film there, you may have to look elsewhere.

Location 3:

Our third location to be used in our music video is going a high street, again we would like to film this scene during the night as I think the luminous lights from the shops contrasted by the dark background would add an amazing visual effect to our video. Again, we wanted to choose a location that would be easily accessible, so that if we would need to film certain parts of the music video again, it would be easy to get to the location and film. We also think that this location would be essential for our music video as it would offer the audience a chance to see the environment in which the youths in the music video have grown up in, this will help to add a sense of reality to it as it is nothing that anyone has not seen before.

Audience Feedback (Joe):

Q1: What do you think about this chosen location to be used in our music video?

A1: I think it would be a very good idea to use this as one of your locations for the music video. The different colour lights given off by the shop signs also complement the visuals. As well as that it gives the audience an insight on the characters in the music video and what they see and do on a daily basis, this will help to build a relationship between the audience and the youths in the video.

Q2: Is there any faults with this chosen location? Or anything you think that may need reassessing?

A2: The only negative about using this as a location is that it could be seen as very cliche, as multiple artists use similar locations to film their music videos, you should be make sure that there is a valid point to use this as a location to add to the story of the music video, and not just because it will look visually appealing.

Moodboard (Morgan)

Moodboard

Below is a moodboard i have constructed based upon our genre of music (grime). It includes locations, props, artists, costumes, logos and brands relating to the genre.

Costume (Morgan)

Costume

I believe costume is a tool we can be pretty flexible with during this task, there is no rule in terms of what an artist should wear in a video. What a costume can do however is give an insight into what the subjects/characters in a production are like i.e personality.

Typical grime attire consists of casual clothing however you tend to find bigger artists possessing their own individual trends that they express visually.

Krept - Last Night In Lagos

Krept is seen in this video sporting a Puma X Bape hoodie amongst several other people wearing the jacket collaboration.
Krept & Konan - 'Dunya'

Konan wears a black and white puma tracksuit.

Jaykae - 'Pull Up'

Jaykae is pictured wearing a black tracksuit with a dad-cap.

Skepta - Shutdown

Arguably the most iconic grime video to date, extras can be seen sporting nike trainers, tn's and air max 97's.

I feel as a group we can incorporate certain iconographic elements of the genre however i feel each character featured in the video can bring their own flavour to their visual representation, it will help them look in place without making them simply blend in. In addition i want us to not only film a video but create a realistic experience for the viewer in doing so i feel dressing in an appropriate costume is key, this means not over dressing or over accessorising.

Location (Morgan)

Location Ideas

Typical of the grime genre location tends to consist of Urban settings. These contribute to the project to create a sense of realism or continuity as it may relate to lyrical content.

My ideas

- Cafe
- City
- Domestic Scenes
- Petrol Station
- Car Park
- Road
- Fast Food Shop
- Convenience Store

I want us to use multiple urban locations in order to portray a story, we should manipulate each location and setting to forge a believable narrative, whether we chose to use a wide array or a minimum.

I also want us to go one step further and record an intro without the track, this can be useful in setting the scene and giving the audience an insight into understanding the story being told in more depth.
I feel this can be done in a location such as a cafe, fast food shop or domestic setting one in which dialogue may easily flow.

Skepta - Shutdown

Dave - JKYL and HYD

Kano - This is England

Other settings

These days with grime artists gaining more of a worldwide following and investing more in production they have taken their videos out of their typical environment of the UK but have still stayed true to the urban settings. This is most notable with artists Stormzy - 'One Take Freestyle' and AJ Tracey & Dave - 'Thiago Silva'. For time and financial purposes filming abroad wouldn't perhaps be the most likely or straight forward options for us.

Music Video Ideas/Story (Morgan)

Music video idea - Story

Don't Worry About Me

Analysing the lyrical content, genre and given our tools i can see that we can depict a story of ones growth, maturing in an attempt to prosper and show that they are and individual who can take care of them-self hence 'Don't Worry about me'. Considering the collaborative effort through the songs verses with other artists we can create a visual depicting a journey with the inclusion of multiple characters.

1. Nocturnal Scenes - Production - Shooting/ Time/ Setting

I believe shooting a heavy percentage of the production during evening times can enhance this notion of a character being unafraid and responsible.
I personally feel nocturnal shots add an air of tensity to a film/video and make for an effective setting especially for music videos of this genre and related ones.
To make this effective however i believe we will require a strong source of lighting otherwise the production will fall flat due to unclear, blurry visuals that are dominated by noise.

Konan -  'Last Night In L.A'

This video is shot completely nocturnally by cinematographer Kaylum.
It depicts artist Konan (of the duo 'Krept and Konan') telling stories of how he's matured through life and how he's dealing with success and fame as a result of hard work.

2. Black and White - Post Production- Editing

Including multiple black and white shots will instil a seriousness to the production, it will also add an element of timelessness to the video as the lack of colour creates a retro feel.
Black and white will also give us a variety of varied scenes to comprise in our final piece which if kept simple and with purpose can make for a great video with a range of contrasting scenes.

Skepta - Man

This 2016 hit is from Skepta's album Konnichiwa. The video is peppered with black and whites scenes which in relation to this production enhances the element of crime, mayhem and also reduces the likelihood of the video becoming dated.

3. Settings

Story - Intro

In order to help get across a believable narrative i think an intro can help us to do this. We can do so with dialogue or without, showing actions with an instrumental track playing. Certain locations i thought of for an intro include...

A shop
A domestic setting
A cafe

These settings will allow for us to film simple scenes that are heavily dialogue driven for in cafe's, shops and especially domestic environments conversation frequently flows, thus it wouldn't feel contrived and fake when considering the final product as a whole.

Planning: Permission sought for the use of audio track (Pio George)

It was very important for our group to choose an unsigned artist as picking a signed artist will cause great difficulties in gaining permissions and if we are unable to and still did it, the video would be copyright claimed and taken down from YouTube. Also, it was very important for us to ask permissions form unsigned artist as if we did not it would count as stealing their product and the artist can immediately copyright claim the video on YouTube.

Audience Profile (Morgan)

Audience Profile

In a genre such as grime the audience profile is less defined than other genres, this is heavily due to the fact that it is still a genre in it's infancy and is still finding it's identity. However in recent there is a stereotypical outline of a grime fan being drawn, such stereotypes have been exposed comically through social media sites such as twitter in the form of memes...

'Listens to Skepta once', referring to youths dressing in a certain fashion due to influence from the award winning grime mc.

Audience Research (Morgan)

Audience Research

I went around gathering information on a possible demographic to aim our product at. I asked people about their favourite genres of music and their reasons for it to see if there was any influence we could have on it in our final product.

Audience Profile (Giordano)

Research and planning: Questionnaire (Giordano)

For my research into audience I carried out a a questionnaire to build a basic profile of my audience and to find out more about what the audience like to see n videos. Consisting of 5 basic open questions, I wanted to keep it short and simple to make it as effective and honest as possible.

1. What is your age?
2. What gender are you?
3. Who is currently your favorite grime artist?
4. How often do you attend grime events?
5. What do you expect to see in a grime video
6. Where do you hear about and view grime videos?

After collecting results from 20 questionnaires, here are the results.

Audience Research (Giordano)

Below is a survey that I sent out to multiple people in order to get an Idea of who our exact target audience for our music video would be, I have also analysed the results in order for us to be able to compare different peoples answers. Create your own user feedback survey

Analysis of survey feedback:

From this we can see that 90% of people who listen to grime music are male, and only 20% are female, showing us that a large majority of out target audience are going to be males.

In this, we can see that 90% of people that listen to grime music are aged between 15-20 years old, and only 10% are aged between 20-25. Showing us that we will be targeting males aged between 15-20 and also 20-25

Here we can see that 70% of people who took part in the survey listen to grime music, 10% listen to R n B, 10% listen to Hip - Hop and 10% listen to drum and bass. This is in our favour as we have already chosen the grime genre to produce a music video for, and it was the most popular answer in the survey.

Here we can see that 60% of people listen to music for 2-4 hours a day, 30% listen to it for 4-8 hours a day, and 10% listen to it for 8 + hours. From this we can see that people tend to listen to their preferable genre of music quite often.

We can see that the top answers for what people like about grime are its variation, its rawness and its authenticity. This shows us that our target audience do not follow crowds and prefer to listen to a genre of music that is not mainstream (Grime).

From the two screenshots above, you can see that there are a variety of grime artists ranging from popular mainstream artists (Stormzy) to the lesser known artists (Bugzy Malone). The fact the few of the answers have repeated them selves shows me that our audience have a good knowledge of the grime genre.

From the images above we can see a variety of opinions on what costume's grime artists commonly wear. It is evident that our target audience believe that our characters costumes in the music video should consist of tracksuits and puffer jackets. this has extremely helped us as it has steered our ideas for costume's forward.

In regards to location, our target audience made it clear with their answers that they think it is essential to include dark, nocturnal scenes consisting of car parks, empty streets and estates. This has helped massively to narrow down our location ideas to the ones that our target audience feel are necessary.

Finally, we can see that our target audience again have a variety of answers for what they believe are the typical conventions in the grime genre. To summerise their answers, they believe grime has a sense of realism and rawness which attract them to it, suggesting they have a passion for this type of music.
